Yelian Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba. He is the second child born to Mercedes Valdes and Alfredo Garcia. Mercedes studied psychology at the University of Havana, and Alfredo studied medicine, he later went on to obtain a Ph.D from the University of Rostock in former East Germany.
Yelian attended elementary and high school in the west end of Toronto. During his high school years he focused mostly on sports; he was the team captain on the baseball team and ran track and field. He also participated in the school band, studying trumpet, and to this day is an avid jazz fan.
Following high school, Yelian obtained an academic scholarship and attended York University for his undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry. He then went on to pursue medical studies at Saba University School of Medicine.
Upon graduating, Yelian got admission into the orthopedic surgery residency program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He completed almost two years of his five year program to focus on a much shorter family medicine residency.
In early 2015, Yelian and a small group of insurance industry professionals got together and formed Legal Expense Canada, an insurance broker start-up which is poised to make a definite impact in the industry. In 2016, Yelian Garcia decided to pursue his profound interest in finance, economics, and business; he enrolled in the Canadian Securities Institute and completed the Chartered Investment Manager designation as well as the Derivatives Market Strategist certificate. In 2018 he enrolled in the International MBA program at Schulich School of Business and undertook the CFA program. He is currently a CFA level 2 candidate.
