Yelian Garcia is an accomplished finance and healthcare professional with over a decade of experience in the clinical sciences. He is also a thriving, goal-oriented entrepreneur with a growth mindset, strong attention to detail, and a focus on efficiency.
A native of Cuba, Yelian Garcia has lived in Toronto, Canada, since his family immigrated in 1994. He attended elementary and high school in the Rexdale area, where he was active in the school band and on the athletic field, and earned the top grade in several of his classes.
After graduating from high school, Yelian Garcia attended York University on an academic scholarship, earning his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry before moving onto medical school. In 2008, Yelian graduated from the Saba University School of Medicine, an American medical school located in the Caribbean. After earning his medical degree, Yelian continued with postgraduate medical training at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
Five years into his healthcare career as a practicing physician, Yelian Garcia decided to follow his true passion for international finance and global affairs. After shifting his career path toward the financial sector, Yelian earned his a certificate in Derivatives Market Strategies and Advanced Investment Advise from the Canadian Securities Institute in Toronto. He also became a Chartered Investment Manager Designation Holder. Most recently, Yelian graduated from the Schulich School of Business at York University with an International MBA in finance and international business.
Yelian Garcia is particularly interested in capital markets, global finance, international economics, and development. He also has an interest in Latin America, Asia, emerging markets, as well as the intersection between finance and the life sciences.
Yelian Garcia currently works as a partner and Financial Manager for Legal Expense Canada, a company he founded with a friend who is an experienced insurance professional. Legal Expense Canada is a private insurance broker partnered with and underwritten by ARAG, specializing in legal expense protection.
Yelian has also worked as a Financial Analyst for Micredito, a microfinance institution operating in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. In this role, Yelian Garcia was responsible for the revamping of credit risk management policies. He also supported key stakeholders in meeting reporting and disclosure requirements by preparing and reviewing financial and regulatory disclosure documents and prepared and reviewed client and loan account reconciliations.
As an entrepreneur, Yelian has found that it’s essential to be curious and willing to try new things while outworking the competition. He thinks all entrepreneurs should dream big, continue to learn, take of themselves physically, and remained engaged in the world around them. He also thinks it’s important to challenge your thinking from time to time and re-evaluate your core beliefs.
In his personal life, Yelian Garcia volunteers at the humane society, and enjoys exercising, listening to Jazz, and reading. He is also interested in performing arts and science advocacy.
